Many imagine Tokyo as a city of cutting-edge technology and futuristic gadgets. But for first-time visitors, it’s often the contrast between high-tech modernity and nostalgic charm that leaves the strongest impression. One expression of this is Showa Retro, a fondness for anything that evokes Japan’s Showa era (1926–1989), whether places, objects or atmosphere. This 3-km walk takes you past a series of traces of Showa charm.
This walk was carefully put together by Yukiko Tajima, author of The 500 Hidden Secrets of Tokyo. It is included in the guide but can also be bought separately. Either way, it will take you to hidden spots that most tourists never find.
The walk will be available for download as soon as your purchase is complete. The PDF file can be opened on mobile or printed.
